Ice Bath vs Chiller Break-Even Calculator

Reviewed for 2026, updated September 8, 2026.

Estimates how many pounds of bagged ice each session needs, what that costs per year, and how many months it takes for a chilled cold plunge to pay for itself, for anyone deciding between a plain tub and a chiller.

Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

Plenty of people start with a stock tank and a few bags of ice, then wonder whether the chilled plunge they keep admiring would actually save money. The answer depends on how warm your tap water runs, how cold you like it, how often you plunge and what ice costs where you live. This calculator works it through with real heat physics rather than a guess, and gives you a break-even in months.

Cooling a tub from tap temperature to your target means removing a fixed amount of heat: 8.34 pounds of water per gallon, one BTU per pound per degree. Each pound of ice absorbs 144 BTU as it melts, plus one BTU for every degree the melt water then warms to your target. Dividing one by the other gives pounds of ice per session; your price per pound turns that into dollars, and your weekly habit turns it into a yearly bill. The chiller premium divided by the monthly ice spend is the break-even. The estimate is deliberately optimistic for ice, since it ignores heat from the air and your body, so real ice use and the real case for a chiller are both a little stronger than shown.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your tub's filled volume, the temperature of your tap water and the temperature you want to plunge at.
  2. Add what ice costs per pound where you shop and how many sessions a week you take.
  3. Enter the extra cost of the chilled option you are considering and read the ice per session, the yearly ice bill and the break-even in months.

What the math assumes

  • Ice is assumed to be at 32°F when added and absorbs 144 BTU per pound as it melts, plus 1 BTU per pound for every degree the melt water warms to your target; these are physical constants.
  • Water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon and the tub is filled fresh from the tap for every session.
  • No heat gain from the air, the tub walls or your body is modeled, so real ice use will be somewhat higher than the estimate.
  • The chiller side counts only the purchase premium you enter; its electricity and upkeep are not included, so the true break-even lands a little later than shown. Our Cost of Ownership Calculator covers those running costs.
  • Yearly figures use 52 weeks, and break-even months divide the chiller premium by the monthly ice spend. If the monthly ice spend is 0 (no sessions, ice priced at 0, or tap water already at or below your target) the break-even shows 0 months as a placeholder, which means the chiller never pays back on ice savings alone, not that it pays back instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I seem to use more ice than the calculator says?

The estimate assumes ice sitting right at its 32°F melting point and no heat creeping in from the air, the tub or your body. In practice ice arrives partly melted and the tub warms while you soak, so budget somewhat above the figure.

Does the break-even include the chiller's electricity?

No, only the purchase premium. Electricity and upkeep push the break-even a little later, and you can estimate them with our Cost of Ownership Calculator. For most frequent plungers the ice bill still dominates.

Can I reuse the water and just top up with ice?

You can, and it cuts ice use because you are cooling from a lower starting temperature. Set the tap temperature to the water's actual temperature when you start, and remember that without filtration the water will need changing often.
