The sticker price on a luxury cold plunge is only the opening number. A chiller runs every day, water gets changed, filters and sanitizer need replacing, and over five years those quiet costs add up to a figure that most buying guides never mention. This calculator puts the whole picture in one place so you can compare two units, or a chilled unit against a simpler tub, on an honest basis.

The math is straightforward and fully visible. Daily chiller electricity is multiplied by your utility rate and 365 days, your yearly upkeep figure is added, and the result is spread across the years you plan to own the plunge. Divide the grand total by the number of plunges you will actually take and you get a cost per session, which is often the number that settles the decision. Nothing is hidden in the formula: every figure comes from an input you can change.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the delivered and installed price of the plunge you are considering and how many years you expect to keep it.
  2. Add the chiller's daily electricity use from its spec sheet, your utility rate and a yearly budget for water, filters and sanitizer.
  3. Set how many plunges your household takes each week and read the running cost, the total cost of ownership and the all-in cost per plunge.

What the math assumes

  • Electricity cost is your daily kWh times your rate times 365 days; seasonal swings in chiller workload are not modeled.
  • Upkeep is the flat yearly figure you enter; nothing is baked in for water, filters or sanitizer.
  • Cost per plunge spreads the purchase price plus every running cost across all sessions over the ownership period, using 52 weeks per year. If plunges per week is 0 there are no sessions to spread the cost across, so the cost per plunge shows 0 as a placeholder, not because an unused plunge is free.
  • No resale value, financing interest, repairs or extended warranty costs are included.
  • Monthly running cost is simply the annual running cost divided by 12.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my chiller's daily electricity use?

Look for the rated power draw in watts on the spec sheet, then estimate how many hours a day the compressor actually cycles on. Multiply the two and divide by 1,000 to get kWh per day. An insulated tub with a lid in a cool room keeps that number low.

Should I include the cost of the electrical outlet or a deck?

Yes, if you would not have spent it otherwise. Add it to the purchase price so the cost per plunge reflects the real outlay.

Why is the cost per plunge so sensitive to sessions per week?

Because the purchase price is fixed, every extra session spreads it thinner. A plunge used daily costs far less per session than one used once a week, which is worth thinking through honestly before buying at the top of the range.
